I know my friends on Facebook are trying to stump me with their “How do I deduct….” questions. One of the tougher ones is how to write off golf.
It’s tricky, but the answer on how to do it is probably not what you might think.
First of all, here’s what you can’t do. You can’t take a prospect, employee, vendor or customer out for a game of golf and just write it off.
But you can still get the write-off, if you instead have a business discussion before or after the game. You also can get a directly related entertainment deduction for the meal or snack afterwards at the clubhouse.
Make sure you keep good documentation of what conversation you had and what the best outcome would be. Also track the receipts (a picture with your smart phone works) so you can prove you actually paid for the expenses.
And a note to my friends on Facebook, you’re going to have to try harder to stump me!
